Certificate IV in Community Services Work

Overview

The Certificate IV in Community Services Work qualification prepares you for work in a variety of community settings in a number of roles. Some of these roles include – Community Support Workers, Community Development Worker, Residential Care Worker, Support Worker, Hostel and Refuge Worker, Advocate, Aged and Disability Officer, Community Project Officer or Disability Services Officer. Other community related positions are also available in areas such as recreation programs, residential services, educational, employment and rehabilitation support services.

Community Service Workers find employment in the government and private sector, social housing aged, disabled and youth programs, as well as non-clinical mental health settings.

Community Services Workers and others in related roles may –

  • provide a range of services and interventions to clients;
  • implement community education and interventions;
  • work in a range of contexts such as community based organisations, residential rehabilitation services and outreach services;
  •  have supervisory responsibilities;
  • work under the broad guidance of others;
  • involve intervention processes applied in residential and community settings;
  • work to encourage and help community groups to participate in decision making processes that impact on their needs;
  •  have opportunity to engage with the community, personal contact and travel within communities, including attending evening meetings and occasional weekend activities.

Your knowledge and skills gained through this qualification and/or previous experience will equip you to design and deliver programs that aim to enhance the well being of individuals and groups. This means you will be employed in a professional environment providing services and support to people within a range of community settings.

Units

The Certificate IV in Community Services Work is made up of fourteen units of competency. Nine of these units are core units and five are elective units.

A number of units within this qualification are common to other Certificate IV qualifications in Mental Health and Disability, therefore individual training plans can be developed to suit your background and learning needs.
